My Take
Andrzej Bartkowiak's career arc fascinates me because he reversed the usual order of seniority. Trained at the legendary Lodz Film School, he spent the 1980s shooting eleven films for Sidney Lumet, absorbing how performance and image lock together from behind the lens. Then, from the 2000s, he stepped into the director's chair himself, mostly on action films. I tend to trust directors who came up as cinematographers; they read a frame instinctively and rarely waste an image. Whether his action movies are masterpieces is beside the point. What I admire is the craftsman's eye he carried with him from camera to command, intact.
