Animal Hamaguchi

Most people outside Japan know Animal Hamaguchi, if at all, as the man who screams encouragement on television. That framing sells him short. Born Heigo Hamaguchi in Hamada, Shimane Prefecture in 1947, he built his reputation as a tag team specialist at a time when he was undersized for a heavyweight. Wrestlers who cannot win on physical scale have to win on timing, positioning and partnership, and that is a far more interesting skill set to watch. His second act matters just as much as the first. Since retiring from the ring he has worked as a trainer in both professional and amateur wrestling, earning genuine respect in a discipline that rarely forgives showmen. That context changes how the famous shouting reads. It isn't a television gimmick bolted onto a former athlete; it sounds like the ordinary working voice of someone who has spent decades in a gym pushing other people past what they thought they had.
