Anita Yuen

Anita Yuen is, to me, a perfect emblem of Hong Kong cinema's golden age. Emerging from a beauty pageant into modelling, singing and acting, she lit up films like C'est la vie, mon chéri and the gender-bending He's a Woman, She's a Man. What I value is her range: she could pivot between comedy and heartbreak without losing her warmth on screen. So many performers of that era coasted on glamour, but Yuen brought real craft. For anyone curious about 1990s Hong Kong culture, her filmography is one of the most inviting doors I can recommend.
