Anna Gunn

Anna Gunn earned my lasting respect with Skyler White on Breaking Bad. Playing a character that audiences openly resented, and doing it without softening her into likability, is one of the bravest choices a working actor can make, and two consecutive Emmys vindicated her completely. That kind of role demands an actor secure enough to absorb hostility for the story's sake. Her Northwestern training shows in the precision she brought to Deadwood and her legal dramas too. I think the real measure of Gunn isn't the trophies but her willingness to be the necessary, uncomfortable presence a great show needs.
