Aya Hirano

I'll be honest: for me, Aya Hirano is forever the voice of Haruhi Suzumiya, and that's not a knock, that's a compliment so big it sort of swallows everything else. There was a stretch in the late 2000s where she felt genuinely unstoppable, and the hardware backs me up: a Seiyu Award for best new actress in 2007, then best lead actress plus a singing award in 2008, basically out of the gate. What I respect most, though, is the second act. Plenty of people would've coasted on anime nostalgia, but she leaned hard into musical theater and kept actually singing live, which tells me she's a performer first and a "voice actress" second. After a 2011 scandal over relationships with members of her backing band, she was dropped by her label and has received death threats ever since, which she cites for largely stepping away from anime voice work, yet she keeps walking her own road on her own terms, and honestly I find that easy to root for.
