My Take
Ben Platt is, to me, one of the great gifts the stage has handed the wider world. His portrayal of the lonely, trembling boy in Dear Evan Hansen earned a Tony and a Grammy, but what stays with me is the sheer ache in that voice. Yes, he came from a producing family and trained young, yet no pedigree manufactures that kind of raw, vulnerable singing. Educated at Columbia, he can also play comedy lightly in The Politician and Theater Camp. I treasure artists who can wrap human fragility in melody so tenderly, and few do it as devastatingly well as he does.
