My Take
Beni Arashiro was born in Okinawa in 1986, grew up partly in San Diego and Yokohama, attended Nile C. Kinnick High School on the US naval base in Yokosuka, and later studied at Sophia University. Knowing that, her bilingual phrasing stops sounding like a stylistic choice and starts sounding like her actual voice. She debuted in 2004 on Avex Trax as Beni Arashiro, then in 2008 moved to Nayutawave Records under Universal Music Japan and re-emerged simply as BENI. I find that pivot more interesting than anything in the music press about it. Japanese pop rarely rewards starting over; a name already placed in front of the public is an asset, and walking away from it means asking listeners to find you again. She did it anyway, and the R&B-leaning career that followed has outlasted the one she abandoned. Reinvention is easy to announce and hard to survive. She survived it.
