My Take
Berkeley Breathed is, to me, a genuine comic genius. Winning the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning with Bloom County puts him in rarefied company, and the strips Outland and Opus only deepen the legend. What I admire is his ability to make readers laugh while slipping a sharp truth past their defenses; satire that disarms is the hardest kind to pull off. Born in Encino and schooled at UT Austin, he ranged across comics, children's books, and film with restless invention. The 2010 Inkpot Award only confirmed what fans long knew. Few creators have made conscience this funny.
