My Take
Bill Callahan is one of those artists I return to when I want honesty without theatrics. Starting as Smog with home-recorded four-track tapes, he built a sound out of imperfection, then slowly grew into the deep, dry, almost spoken delivery that defines his Drag City years. What I value most is his refusal to chase trends; he simply deepens. There is a Gemini sharpness to his lyrics, plainspoken yet quietly devastating. Plenty of musicians get louder with age, but Callahan got clearer. For me he is the rare songwriter whose catalog rewards patience, the kind of voice that makes you sit up straighter.
