Brian Hyland

Brian Hyland captured the bittersweet sweetness of early-1960s pop better than almost anyone of his moment. Scoring a Billboard number one with 'Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polkadot Bikini' as a teenager is remarkable, and 'Sealed with a Kiss' and 'Gypsy Woman' proved it was no fluke. What impresses me is that he did not flame out the way many early successes do; he kept recording into the 1970s and remained a genuine instrumentalist, not just a voice. Bottling the feel of an era into a single song that lingers in memory for decades is a rare talent, and I simply like him for it.
