Carter Beauford

To me Carter Beauford is one of those drummers other drummers quietly worship. His ambidextrous, open-handed approach as a founding member of Dave Matthews Band turns the kit into a melodic instrument rather than a metronome. What I admire most is his fluency across jazz, funk and rock, all folded into a personal vocabulary that never shows off for its own sake. Add the backing vocals and you get a complete musician hiding inside a sideman's role. He is proof that groove and taste outlast flash, and I keep coming back to his playing whenever I want a lesson in musical restraint.
