My Take

Cate Blanchett is, for my money, about as close to the ceiling of screen acting as anyone working today. Melbourne-raised and university-trained, she moves effortlessly across stage, film, producing, and directing, collecting two Academy Awards alongside Golden Globes, a BAFTA, and a Venice acting prize. What awes me is her shape-shifting, the way she can vanish into Elizabeth I or the unraveling socialite of Blue Jasmine and emerge unrecognizable. Few performers can hold elegance and barely contained madness in the same expression. Calling her one of the finest of her generation feels less like praise than plain accuracy, and I am always eager to see who she becomes next.
