My Take
I think Taiwanese baseball is a world Japanese fans should pay more attention to, and Chen Chih-yuan is a good entry point. Born in Taoyuan with roots in the Amis indigenous tribe, he came up through Fu Jen Catholic University as an outfielder, and at 180 cm he clearly had the athleticism the position rewards. Taiwan's leagues have produced plenty of gifted hitters from indigenous communities, and he reads as part of that lineage. As someone chasing the same white ball just across the water from Japan, he stirs an odd kinship in me. His playing-era numbers and memory remain, and I imagine he was a fine ballplayer.
