My Take

Chiken Kakazu was born in Nago, Okinawa in 1941 — which means he came into the world right as the Pacific War was about to swallow his home island whole. Growing up in postwar Okinawa, under U.S. administration until 1972, gives a person a completely different relationship with politics than most Japanese of his generation; it's not abstract, it's the air you breathed. He made it to Waseda, which tells you he had the drive to carry that weight somewhere meaningful, and he spent his life in politics.
