My Take

Chris Stein is my favorite kind of artist, the indispensable one standing slightly out of the spotlight. While Debbie Harry dazzled, he engineered Blondie's sound as co-founder and guitarist, then went deeper into culture by shaping the Wild Style soundtrack and documenting downtown New York as a serious photographer. I find that range telling: he wasn't chasing fame, he was chasing the scene itself, capturing it from inside. The Brooklyn kid who became an archivist of an era earns my respect precisely because his fingerprints are everywhere yet rarely loud. I'd happily spend a day just studying his photographs.
