My Take

I have a soft spot for throwing events, and Christian Cantwell is a fine ambassador for the shot put. Standing 193 cm and coming out of small-town Jefferson City, Missouri, he turned raw power into a world title, an Olympic silver in Beijing 2008, and a fourth-place finish at London 2012. What draws me to him is the unshowy directness of it all: one man, one heavy ball, pure explosive technique. There is no hiding in his sport. His arc from a state university program to the top of the world reflects exactly the kind of patient, blue-collar excellence I find quietly compelling.
