My Take
Christopher Cross is one of those artists I respect precisely because he never chased the spotlight. A kid from San Antonio who, on a single self-titled debut, swept the major Grammys and then took home an Oscar for "Arthur's Theme" the year after, he defined the silky, intelligent sound that the 1980s called soft rock. What strikes me is how little ego seems wrapped up in it; "Sailing" still works as pure mood, weightless and unhurried. He could easily have leaned into celebrity, but instead kept quietly writing and performing for decades. I admire that durability, and I find his craftsmanship far more interesting than fame ever could be.
