My Take
Claudio Abbado is, to my mind, one of the great humanists of the podium. Leading La Scala, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra, he could have ruled by intimidation, yet his legacy is one of collaboration and nurturing young musicians into entirely new ensembles. That generosity, more than any single recording, defines him for me. Honored with the Praemium Imperiale and conducting through serious illness into his eighties, Abbado embodied a life given wholly to music. I find his blend of authority and tenderness genuinely rare and deeply moving.
