My Take

What draws me to Cody Carroll is the quiet grit of his path. Coming out of Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, and the University of Southern Mississippi, he clawed his way to a Major League mound with the Baltimore Orioles, which is a feat most ballplayers only dream of. I have a soft spot for relief pitchers, because theirs is a brutally exposed job, owning every pitch alone on the hill. He may not be a household name, but reaching the big leagues at all is proof of serious talent and stubbornness. I find that small-town-to-MLB arc far more compelling than any highlight reel.
