Coenie van Wyk

Coenie van Wyk catches my attention less for headline fame than for his willingness to cross hemispheres for the game. A Stellenbosch-trained South African who can cover both fly-half and full-back, he brought his skills to Toshiba Brave Lupus in Japan, adapting to a new climate, culture and style of play. I have a soft spot for athletes who become quiet bridges between rugby cultures, carrying the Springbok pedigree into a league still building its global profile. Versatile, adaptable and far from his comfort zone, he is exactly the kind of understated competitor worth rooting for.
