Connie Willis is, to me, one of the most undervalued giants in modern fiction outside genre circles. Yes, she has won more Hugos and Nebulas than anyone, but the raw count undersells her real gift: range. The same writer who shattered me with the plague-stricken grief of Doomsday Book also wrote the giddy farce of To Say Nothing of the Dog. Moving between heartbreak and comedy without breaking stride is rare, and she does it inside the same time-travel framework. I think future readers will rank her alongside the field's true masters, not merely as its most decorated competitor.
