Conrad Anker

Conrad Anker is the kind of figure I genuinely admire because his fame rests on real, dangerous accomplishment rather than image. Leading The North Face climbing team for 26 years is a staggering run of consistency in a sport that punishes mistakes severely. But what fascinates me most is 1999, when he found George Mallory's body high on Everest, finally giving form to a mystery that had hung over mountaineering since 1924. That moment connects modern climbing to its origins in a way few people ever could. As a writer too, he gives the rest of us a window into a world most will never see firsthand.
