Daigo Umehara

To me Daigo Umehara is simply the living legend of competitive fighting games. Born in 1981 in Hirosaki, he mastered Capcom's 2D titles, especially Street Fighter, with a read-and-react focus that borders on the inhuman, fully earning the nickname The Beast. What I respect, though, isn't the win count but the persistence: he stayed at the top from an era when calling oneself a professional gamer earned blank stares, quietly proving the path was real. Now he writes books and mentors younger players. He took something dismissed as mere play and elevated it into a genuine profession, and that pioneering spine wins my full admiration.
