Dandy Sakano

One catchphrase. That is what most people outside Japan would be told about Dandy Sakano — the gold suit, the finger point, the shouted "Gets!" But a joke that simple surviving for decades is genuinely strange. Catchphrase comedians usually get one season and vanish. He did not. What I keep coming back to is the part of his story before comedy. He ran a noodle shop, and only started performing in 1996, in his late twenties. That is late. Most people who make that kind of jump quietly fail, and no one hears about it. He made the jump and then landed the single most repeatable gag of his generation. The other thing worth saying is that he seems entirely unembarrassed. He delivers the same bit whether the room is roaring or dead silent, at the same voltage, in the same suit. Comedians who protect their dignity age badly. He gave his up early, and it has served him well.
