Ahmetcan Kaplan

Ahmetcan Kaplan is exactly the kind of young defender I find quietly compelling. Born in 2003 on Turkey's Black Sea coast in Trabzon, he served his apprenticeship on loan at NEC in the Dutch Eredivisie before returning to Ajax. That path tells me a lot: rather than staying comfortable at home, he chose to be tested in one of Europe's most technical leagues. Centre-backs rarely get the headlines, but it is exactly this patient, away-from-the-spotlight grind that separates the ones who break through. I will be watching to see whether that loan spell has hardened him into a real top-flight defender.
