Eriko Tamura

I've got a real soft spot for Eriko Tamura, because she's one of those late-'80s, early-'90s Japanese idols who could've coasted on the singing-and-dancing glow forever, but instead packed up and went to chase work overseas. Think about that for a second: leaving the country where you're already a known name to start over in a different language and culture, where nobody owes you a thing. That takes a spine. Born in 1973 in Hitachinaka, Ibaraki, and later cast as Princess Yaeko in Heroes and as Mai in Dragonball Evolution, she carries this unshowy, feet-on-the-ground steadiness that I find weirdly moving for someone who came up in the glitter. She never seemed to ride the easy current. She just kept walking her own pace, on her own terms, and honestly I quietly admire the heck out of that.
