My Take
What strikes me about Khondji is the company he keeps. A cinematographer trusted by Fincher, Haneke, Woody Allen, Bong Joon-ho and Wong Kar-Wai isn't just skilled, he's adaptable enough to bend his eye to wildly different temperaments. I find his Iranian-French background quietly fascinating, as if that dual perspective feeds the moody, painterly light he's famous for. Three Oscar nominations and the Legion of Honour confirm the craft, yet he stays refreshingly invisible. For me, he embodies the kind of behind-the-camera artistry that deserves far more recognition than it usually gets in an industry obsessed with names above the title.
