Dave Pegg

I have a soft spot for indispensable sidemen, and Dave Pegg is a textbook example. Born near Birmingham in Acocks Green, he became the longest-serving member of Fairport Convention and also held down bass for Jethro Tull, a resume that marks him as a player everyone wanted. Bass is rarely the headline, yet without it the whole song collapses, and Pegg has quietly carried that load for more than half a century while singing and writing too. I feel a calm, lasting respect for craftsmen like him, unflashy, dependable, and absolutely essential to the music.
