My Take

David Coverdale is, to my ears, the sound of British hard rock at its most sensual. Stepping into Deep Purple's vacant microphone as a near-unknown took nerve, but founding Whitesnake and then conquering the world with the 1987 record showed he was a craftsman, not a fluke. What I admire most is the voice itself: bluesy, elastic, built to soar rather than merely shout. Plenty of singers from his era let their instruments erode, yet Coverdale kept tending his like a trade he respected. That stubborn devotion to the song, decade after decade, is exactly why his Hall of Fame nod feels earned.
