Daya

Daya impressed me early because she arrived with a voice that already had real character. Born Grace Tandon in suburban Pittsburgh, she released her debut EP as a teenager in 2015, and Hide Away, which reached number 23 on the Billboard Hot 100, showed off a slightly shadowed tone and a sharp ear for hooks. What I respect most is that she writes her own material, which gives her music a perspective rather than just polish. Plenty of young pop acts chase trends, but I sense in her an instinct to keep her own color. I am quietly rooting for her.
