My Take
Deniece Williams has one of those voices that instantly justifies the word soul, that soaring upper register on Free and Let's Hear It for the Boy is unmistakable. The BBC calling her one of the great soul voices is no exaggeration. What strikes me is how effortlessly she balanced commercial reach, two Hot 100 number ones, with genuine artistry, four Grammys and a hand in writing and producing her own material. There's a grounded dignity to her, fitting for someone from Gary, Indiana. Voices this real don't date; her records still sound luminous decades on, and I'll always reach for them.
