My Take

Derek Riggs is the rare artist whose creation became more famous than its creator, and I find that fascinating rather than sad. By inventing Eddie, Iron Maiden's ghoulish mascot, he gave a band a face before most fans could hum a riff. His paintings escaped the album sleeve and colonized T-shirts, posters and bedroom walls across decades. To me he proves that heavy metal's identity is as much visual as sonic, and that a quiet illustrator from Portsmouth can shape a global subculture. I respect work that outlives the spotlight, and Eddie is exactly that kind of immortal accident.
