My Take
What draws me to Devin Townsend is his refusal to sit still. Coming out of British Columbia, he gave us the brutal chaos of Strapping Young Lad and then pivoted to sweeping, cosmic, almost spiritual soundscapes in his solo work. Twenty-nine albums is not just output, it is restless curiosity made audible. I admire artists who can hold both extremity and beauty in the same hands without flinching, and he does it with a craftsman's discipline. For me he is one of the most fearlessly inventive musicians of his generation, and every record feels like a new room he has built just to explore.
