Ed Viesturs

Ed Viesturs earns my admiration on a single, staggering fact: he climbed all fourteen eight-thousanders, and did so without supplemental oxygen, the first American ever to complete the set. That isn't athletic achievement so much as a meditation on human limits. To move deliberately, one breath at a time, in air too thin to sustain you, demands a discipline I can barely fathom. What I value just as much is his second life as an author and speaker, translating what the mountains taught him into words. A man who conquers summits and then articulates why is rare indeed.
