My Take

Eddie Cochran is one of rock's great what-ifs for me. Dead at twenty-one, he still managed to bottle pure teenage restlessness in songs like Summertime Blues and C'mon Everybody, and he was quietly tinkering with overdubbing and distortion before most of his peers even understood those tools. What strikes me is how forward-looking his instincts were; he heard the future of rock production and reached for it on his earliest singles. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nod feels almost like an apology for how brief his run was. I keep wondering what he'd have built with one more decade.
