My Take
Edward Zwick is one of the filmmakers I most respect for marrying intelligence with raw emotion. From Glory to The Last Samurai and Blood Diamond, he builds sweeping historical canvases yet never loses the intimate human story inside them. Then, as a producer, he won Best Picture for the delicate romance of Shakespeare in Love, proving an impressive range. A Chicago native and Harvard graduate, he could have made cold, cerebral work, but his films sweat and ache. I value directors who treat the audience as adults while still moving them, and Zwick consistently does both with real conviction.
