My Take
There is something deeply satisfying about Elvin Hayes's story. Rising out of small-town Louisiana on little more than a towering frame and relentless work, he became a Hall of Famer and earned a place on both the NBA's 50th and 75th anniversary teams. I have always preferred the gritty, post-up, rebound-grabbing kind of big man to the highlight-reel showman, and Hayes was exactly that. I also love that he returned to call games for his alma mater, Houston. To me that loyalty says as much about the man as any statistic ever could.
