My Take
Emmanuelle Riva is, to me, one of cinema's truly luminous artists. Her work in Hiroshima mon amour has a transparency that still aches decades later, and her late-career performance in Amour, confronting age and love at eighty-five, left me without words. I love that she was not only an actress but also a poet and photographer; it tells you everything about the depth of her sensibility. The Venice award and that flood of late critics' prizes only confirmed what her face on screen already proved. She passed in 2017, but that gaze is permanent. I hold her in the highest regard.
