My Take
Erik Morales embodies, for me, the very soul of Mexican boxing. The Tijuana native was the first Mexico-born fighter to win titles across four weight divisions, climbing from super bantamweight all the way to light welterweight. His wars with Barrera and Pacquiao remain etched into the sport's collective memory as some of the most thrilling exchanges ever staged. The 2011 Comeback of the Year and 2018 Hall of Fame nod feel entirely earned. That he later turned to politics tells me how deeply rooted he is in his home turf. His come-forward, trade-blows style still gives me chills.
