My Take

For me, Nigel Bruce is forever Dr. Watson, the warm, slightly bumbling foil to Basil Rathbone's razor-sharp Holmes, and I mean that as the highest compliment. A British actor born, curiously, in Ensenada, Mexico, and a holder of the British War Medal, he clearly lived more life than his cozy screen persona let on. What I treasure is his mastery of the supporting role: he never tried to eat the lead, he made the lead shine brighter. Decades after his death in 1953, the reflex to picture this exact man whenever Watson is mentioned says everything. He is my model for the indispensable second lead.

Overview

William Nigel Ernle Bruce (4 February 1895 – 8 October 1953) was a British character actor on stage and screen. He was best known for his portrayal of Dr. Watson in a series of films and in the radio series The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, starring alongside Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes in both.
