My Take
Fat Mike represents a kind of integrity I genuinely respect: the integrity of refusing to grow up the way the industry wants. As NOFX's bassist and voice, he turned snottiness into a craft, and Me First and the Gimme Gimmes proves he can be a joke and a real musician at once. What strikes me is that a Los Angeles kid who went to San Francisco State could have chased easier success, yet he built his own messy, self-governed playground instead. That stubborn independence, sustained since 1982, is exactly why punk still matters to me.
