My Take
Flea fascinates me because the chaos is a disguise. The shirtless, slap-happy madman of Red Hot Chili Peppers shows is actually a trumpet kid raised on jazz, disciplined enough to enroll in university music studies in his forties just to patch the gaps in his theory. That humility, coming from a bassist many would call the most influential of his generation, says everything. Add the conservatory he co-founded to teach kids music in Los Angeles, plus a sneaky-good acting resume, and you get my favorite kind of rock star: one who treats fame as a tool for curiosity rather than a destination. Melbourne's greatest export, as far as I am concerned.
