Flip Wilson

Flip Wilson deserves more remembrance than he tends to get. Hosting his own prime-time variety show from 1970 to 1974, an Emmy-winning Black comedian commanding a national audience, was not just entertainment but a genuine act of breaking ground. His Geraldine character became a cultural touchstone, and the 2019 New Jersey Hall of Fame induction shows his home state never forgot him. What moves me is how he used laughter to quietly dismantle a barrier of his era. I regard pioneers like Wilson, who change the landscape while making people smile, with real admiration.
