My Take
Flying Lotus — Steven Ellison — is one of those rare artists who makes you question whether genre labels are even worth having. Born and raised in Los Angeles, he soaked up the city's jazz heritage (his great-aunt is Alice Coltrane, which tells you everything about his DNA) and filtered it through hip-hop, IDM, and whatever else his brain demanded. His run from Los Angeles through Cosmogramma to You're Dead! is basically a masterclass in controlled chaos, and Flamagra in 2019 showed he still had new territory to map. I love that he doesn't just produce — he directs, he raps, he scores anime (Yasuke in 2021 was a genuinely great pairing of project and artist). Every album feels like a complete world you fall into rather than a playlist you shuffle.
