François Cluzet

François Cluzet is one of those actors who makes you forget you're watching a performance — the guy just disappears into his roles, and I mean that as the highest possible compliment. His César win in 2007 was long overdue recognition from French cinema, but honestly his global breakout came with The Intouchables in 2011, where he played a quadriplegic aristocrat opposite Omar Sy, and the two of them created something genuinely moving without ever tipping into sentimentality. Born in Paris in 1955, Cluzet has worked with a remarkable range of directors — Chabrol, Tavernier, Claire Denis, even Robert Altman — which tells you everything about how seriously the serious filmmakers take him. He has this coiled intensity on screen that reminds me a little of Dustin Hoffman, and I don't throw that comparison around lightly.
