Franz Rogowski

Franz Rogowski intrigues me precisely because he started as a dancer and choreographer before turning to acting. That background shows: he can say more with posture and a flicker of the mouth than most actors manage with a monologue. The fact that directors like Haneke, Petzold, Arnold, and Malick keep seeking him out tells you everything about his presence. I think his physical training gives him a rare bodily intelligence on screen, an instinct for stillness and timing. His 2018 German Film Award felt earned. For me, he is among the most compelling actors working in European cinema right now.
