Funky Kato

Funky Kato, born Shunsuke Kato in 1978 in Hachioji, Tokyo, made his name as the vocalist of Funky Monkey Babys, and has continued as a solo singer-songwriter since the group disbanded in 2013. His lane is the earnest, uplifting, keep-going kind of song, the sort that sophisticated listeners enjoy dismissing. I think that dismissal is lazy. Sincerity is technically difficult to perform. Irony gives a singer somewhere to hide; a straightforwardly encouraging song does not, and an audience detects insincerity in it within about four bars. Doing that for years without curdling into self-parody requires a stable person behind the microphone. The part I find most interesting is the second act. A band breaking up is usually where the story ends, and the frontman's name becomes a footnote in someone's karaoke memory. Kato took the name he had built inside a group and had to justify it alone. That is a harder audition than the first one, and it was complicated in 2016, when a magazine reported an affair with a comedian's wife that left her pregnant; Kato admitted it and apologized.
