Genki Haraguchi

Genki Haraguchi is the kind of footballer whose value never shows up properly in a highlight reel. Born in Kumagaya, Saitama, in 1991, he came through as an attacking talent, then spent a long stretch of his career in Germany, and by the time he was a fixture in the Japan national team he had become something different: the attacking midfielder who does the unglamorous half of the job. Tracking back, closing passing lanes, arriving late in the box. I find that transformation more interesting than raw flair. Flair players are everywhere; players who convert flair into reliability are rare, and coaches keep picking them precisely because they solve problems rather than create them. He is still playing, now in Belgium with Beerschot, which says something about durability in a sport that discards people early. If I were showing a young player one Japanese midfielder's off-ball work, it would probably be his.
