Geoff Hoon

Geoff Hoon strikes me as the consummate Labour operator, a Cambridge-educated barrister who moved from the European Parliament into Westminster and held an unusually wide spread of senior posts: Defence, Transport, Leader of the Commons, Chief Whip. Most politicians build a reputation on one brief; Hoon kept proving himself across very different machinery of government. That versatility takes both intellect and nerve. He was rarely the flashiest figure in the room, but I have a real respect for the kind of public servant who quietly keeps the wheels of an organization turning through changing times.
