My Take

George Robertson commands my respect. Born on Islay in Port Ellen, this Labour heavyweight served as Britain's Defence Secretary before rising to become NATO's tenth Secretary General, steering Western security through the fraught years around 9/11. The weight he carried in that chair must have been immense. The roll call of honors, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Order of the Thistle, decorations from across Europe, speaks to his stature. I rather love that a man from the whisky island took its place name into his peerage, carrying his small hometown onto the world's grandest stage. This is the kind of substantial, principled statesman I deeply admire.
